Author & Artist 1891-1980

Henry Miller (1891-1980) was an American writer and painter best known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new, ultra-candid style that allowed him to frankly depict the human condition in raw, uncompromising terms. Though Miller began painting watercolors as a hobby in his youth, it was not until his later years that he focused in earnest on visual art.Miller's rare and expressive original artwork remains a great investment for the serious collector as well as important historical artifacts of one of the truly great American authors. After establishing himself as a groundbreaking novelist with controversial books like Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, Miller turned to watercolor painting in the 1960s while living in California. He had no formal training, but embraced the medium’s spontaneity and expressiveness. Miller’s watercolors depict the people and places that moved him, including many nudes, portraits, and scenes of daily life. Though less provocative than his writing, his paintings radiate the same authentic spirit and zest for living.Throughout his career as a writer and artist, Miller championed personal freedom, spontaneity, and creativity as fundamental to the human experience. He sought to uncover the miraculous in the mundane and find liberation through complete, uninhibited self-expression. Miller’s fearlessly impassioned approach singles him out as a uniquely American voice. His watercolors, like his books, offer unfiltered insight into his distinctive artistic vision. This gallery is honored to showcase Miller's vibrant watercolors, which exemplify his passion for life and tireless creative spirit. Though lesser known than his writing, these radiant works offer a window into the inner world of a literary giant who never lost his capacity for wonder.

Artist Bio

Jeff Mangum

Musician & Artist 1970-

Jeff Mangum is an American singer, songwriter, and visual artist known for his work with the indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel. Though the band was short-lived in the 1990s, their album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea gained a cult following and critical acclaim for its unique lo-fi sound and emotionally raw lyrics. Mangum is famously reclusive, shying away from the spotlight even during the height of Neutral Milk Hotel's popularity. His artistic output declined after the band's breakup, but his few surviving original drawings provide a glimpse into his surreal visual imagination that complements the dreamy psych-folk music he is beloved for. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of Mangum's influential but scarce artwork.

I Used To Be Lucid

Original acrylic on aluminum plate, 1989

This abstract painting titled "I Used to be Lucid" vividly showcases the artist's mastery of acrylics on an aluminum printing plate surface. Created while the artist was working for a newspaper in Athens, Greece, this rare 12.4 by 9.5 inch piece offers unique textural qualities thanks to the industrial printing plate medium. The acrylic paint bonds indelibly to the aluminum, producing saturated colors that will never fade or deteriorate. The subtle hammered effect of the printing plate adds beautiful visual texture and depth to the expressive forms. Wonderfully framed to 17 by 20 inches, this resilient surface can withstand high traffic areas without fear of damage. Mounted on a rigid backing, this work of art will maintain its integrity for many years to come. A remarkable example of the artist's experimental Athenian period, this dynamic acrylic painting will enhance any art collection.

"I painted on printing plate aluminum a lot while we were in Athens, Georgia because I worked for the newspaper there, and had access to a lot of the stuff. It has advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is that acrylic paint sticks to it forever. You can't scrape the stuff off to save your soul. We put a picture in the front license plate holder of a car, and drove it around for a year. Washed the road grime off, and it was good as new." - Dan Reeder
